Interstate commerce was moved to the Senate floor, the policy committee in the senate planned to take action, two bills were set for introduction, and next week’s schedule was announced.

Here are some observations of the Washington State Legislature (WA Legislature) for Thursday January 26th, the 18th day of the 2023 Regular Session.

My top 4 takeaways:

  • On Thursday morning, members of the Washington State Senate Labor and Commerce Committee were scheduled to hear a bill addressing retail theft and host executive sessions on social equity and pre-employment screening legislation.

      • SB 5080 - “Expanding and improving the social equity in cannabis program.”
      • SB 5123 - “Concerning the employment of individuals who lawfully consume cannabis.” 
  • Two new bills were scheduled for introduction on Thursday, a companion to the WSLCB cannabinoid regulation bill and legislation to enable adults to grow cannabis at home.
  • In the late afternoon on Wednesday, legislative staff announced the initial committee schedules for the following week which signaled substantial activity on cannabis bills in the Senate and movement on medical cannabis legislation in the House.
