The focus of this webinar is to assist a youth group advisers in preparing youth advocates to participate in policy change activities. Participants are provided with a variety of examples of non-legislative policy change related to substance use that target the policies of schools, businesses or government entities. Presenters will also provide a detailed description of the “Retail Responsibility Project” a process used to test if local retailers would sell marijuana-themed merchandise to teens and pre-teens, and efforts to get them to change their practices/policies.
Webinar participants are also provided with a 10-step process for engaging in legislative policy change and these steps are illustrated with examples of actual legislative efforts initiated by youth advocates. This includes a case study of: Passing a Local Ordinance, a step-by-step description of the process used by students in Dover, NH to pass a city ordinance in that community. A comprehensive handout and other tools to assist adult advisers in training their youth advocates are provided.
