In April 2018, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) assumed regulatory authority to license and regulate makers of food products that contain marijuana. The Department required these processing businesses to apply for a special marijuana infused edibles (MIE) endorsement on their business licenses.

Thank you for your email. We appreciate the Cannabis Observer’s interest in the regulation of MIE products. You are correct that a small work group is meeting on December 16th. This work group consists of WSDA representatives and several industry representatives who we have asked to discuss with us in more detail the possibility of MIE product expansion. We believe that a small meeting will best serve our objective of actively engaging with industry stakeholders to better understand how expansion, and timing of any such expansion, might impact industry so that we can continue to help ensure the safety of MIE products. Therefore, we will not be inviting anyone outside of the work group to join this meeting. We do, however, look forward to sharing the results of the work group meeting at the next meeting with the larger stakeholder group and hope you will join us there.

Luisa Castro, WSDA Acting Director of Produce Safety (Dec 14, 2020)
