- During the 2022 legislative session, the Washington State Legislature passed a budget proviso directing the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) to appoint a Washington State Hemp in Food Task Force. The task force will make recommendations to the Legislature about regulations and guidance for hemp in food. Those recommendations are due to the appropriate legislative committees by December 1, 2022.
- At the task force’s first meeting on July 20th, members introduced themselves before debating the background and scope of their mandated report, revealing many were predisposed to laying the groundwork for legislation in 2023.
- The task force’s second meeting on August 3rd was not recorded, but Cannabis Observer obtained the WSDA presentation, the facilitator meeting notes, and draft bill text put forward by Bonny Jo Peterson, Executive Director of the Industrial Hemp Association of Washington (IHEMPAWA), via public records requests.
- Cannabis Observer was allowed to record audio of the task force’s third meeting on August 17th. Members received a presentation from Nephi Stella, Director of the University of Washington Center for Cannabis Research (UW CCR) and a member of the task force, which covered much of the same material as his April 4th webinar on “Optimizing the Medical Properties of Cannabis.” Members then spent the remainder of their time defining work groups and prioritizing efforts.
- At publication time, an agenda for the fourth meeting of the full task force had not been published.
