WSLCB - Board Caucus
On Tuesday at 10am PT, the weekly Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) Board Caucus was scheduled to recur.
- [ Event Details ]
- According to the agenda, members were scheduled to host Washington State Institute for Public Policy (WSIPP) Senior Research Associate Amani Rashid for a “Report Review.”
- An original requirement of Initiative 502 (I-502) was review of legalization impacts in a series of reports from WSIPP, where research staff are overseen by a board of directors that includes several state legislators. Rashid joined WSIPP in May 2020 and was eventually assigned principal responsibility for the I-502 evaluation.
- In September 2023, Rashid presented a report on cannabis health and safety outcomes to the WSIPP board, detailing patterns and limitations in their data, prompting members to ask about the findings and future studies.
- In late December, WSIPP staff published another report, Licensed Non-Medical Cannabis Retail Access and High School Outcomes in Washington State, which I brought to the attention of the WSLCB board and staff on January 3rd. After speaking with Rashid, I followed up with the Board on January 17th to suggest the agency undertake specific data collection to assist cannabis researchers more generally.
- During the January 30th WSLCB Board Caucus, Board Member Jim Vollendroff precipitated a discussion about inviting WSIPP staff to visit with the board and begin forging stronger links with the fledgling WSLCB Research Unit led by Research Manager Sarah Okey. All members were enthusiastic about the proposal.
- Both Rashid and Okey were in attendance at the Washington State Health Care Authority Prevention Research Subcommittee (WA HCA PRSC) quarterly meeting on March 13th.
