Washington State Capitol - Martin Luther King Jr Day (January 15, 2024)

10 cannabis-related bills were scheduled for action during the second week of the 2024 session beginning on MLK Jr. Day, as regulators tracked implications in their scopes of authority.

Here’s a look at cannabis-related policymaking events on the calendar in the week ahead.

Monday January 15th

The State of Washington recognizes the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday, but the Washington State Legislature would remain active during the shorter 60-day regular session.

WA House RSG - Committee Meeting

On Monday at 1:30pm PT, the Washington State House Regulated Substances and Gaming Committee (WA House RSG) was scheduled to convene.

    • HB 2151 - “Reassigning the accreditation of private cannabis testing laboratories from the department of ecology to the department of agriculture.”
  • Executive Session
    • HB 1249 - “Regarding limits on the sale and possession of retail cannabis products.”

Tuesday January 16th

WSLCB - Board Caucus

On Tuesday at 10am PT, the weekly Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) Board Caucus was scheduled to recur.

WA Senate LC - Committee Meeting

On Tuesday at 10:30am PT, the Washington State Senate Labor and Commerce Committee (WA Senate LC) was scheduled to convene.

    • SB 5404 - “Increasing cannabis revenue distributions to local governments.”
      • While an executive session was scheduled on SB 5404 - no public hearing had been held on the 2023 legislation.  Most likely, this meant members intended to refer the bill to a different committee.

On Tuesday at 4pm PT, the WA House RSG was scheduled to convene.

    • HB 1650 - “Requiring voter approval for local government prohibitions on cannabis businesses.”

Wednesday January 17th

On Wednesday at 10am PT, the bi-weekly WSLCB Board Meeting was scheduled to recur.

Thursday January 18th

WA House RSG - Committee Meeting

On Thursday at 8am PT, the WA House RSG was scheduled to convene.

    • HB 2334 - “Transferring certain cannabis licensing activities to the department of agriculture.”

WTSC - Commission Meeting

On Thursday at 10am PT, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) quarterly meeting was scheduled to recur.

Friday January 19th

WA Pharmacy Commission - Legislative Review

On Friday at 12pm PT, the weekly Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission (WA Pharmacy Commission) Legislative Review was scheduled to recur.

  • Commissioners hosted their first legislative review of the 2024 session on Friday January 12th.  The bill report indicated no overlap with cannabis-related legislation, but Commissioners were staying apprised of the psilocybin services bill, SB 5977.
