OSU CBARC - WSU Prosser IAREC - Hemp Field Days

In Oregon and Washington, land grant university and federal agricultural scientists invited the public to tour experimental fiber and grain hemp fields to learn about contemporary research.

Here’s a look at cannabis-related policymaking events on the calendar in the week ahead.

Monday July 24th

Tuesday July 25th

WSLCB - Board Caucus

On Tuesday at 10am PT, the weekly Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) Board Caucus was scheduled to recur.

WA HCA - DBHR Listening Session

The monthly Washington State Health Care Authority (WA HCA) Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) Behavioral Health Service Provider Listening Session was cancelled.

Wednesday July 26th

WSU Prosser IAREC - Hemp Field Day

On Wednesday the Washington State University Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (WSU Prosser IAREC) planned to host several events for Hemp Field Day.

  • WSU Prosser IAREC and Oregon State University Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center (OSU CBARC) planned to host two Hemp Field Days on Tuesday July 25th (in Oregon) and Wednesday July 26th (in Washington) for visitors to “hear about how fiber and grain hemp perform with and without irrigation, nitrogen management, dual-purpose production systems, and current pest and disease issues.”
    • The WSU Prosser IAREC is the focal point for the University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS), and the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) research, extension, and plant certification programs that address the concerns of irrigated agriculture.
    • The OSU CBARC is a branch of the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station at OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences. The Pendleton Station is co-located with the Columbia Plateau Conservation Research Center, a unit of the USDA ARS.  The mission of the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center is “to conduct research and extend knowledge to enhance agricultural production on non-irrigated croplands while protecting the environment and sustaining rural communities in Oregon and beyond.”
  • Registration is required for the free, in-person event which includes roughly half-day agendas on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • On Wednesday morning, visitors will be invited to tour the WSU Prosser IAREC hemp fields on the Roza Research Farm and hear the following briefings:
    • “​​Essential Oil Hemp Variety Trial” by David Gang
    • “Disease Issues & Virus Detection” by Naidu Rayapati
    • “Pest Issues with Hemp” by Camille Wagstaff
      • At publication time, Wagstaff was a PhD candidate in Molecular Plant Sciences and co-owner of White Coat Laboratories.
  • After a brief tour of a licensed producer farm, visitors will view the plots at the WSU Prosser IAREC Headquarters and hear the following updates:
    • “Irrigated Fiber and Grain Variety Trials” by David Gang
    • “International Partnerships” by M. Corbett Miteff
      • Miteff was a co-founder of konopiUS, “a group of international hemp industry specialists who have merged together to better bring certified hemp varieties from the European Union plant variety database to American Farmers.”
    • “National Germplasm Collection” by Tyler Gordon
      • At publication time, Gordon was a USDA ARS Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU) Research Geneticist focusing on hemp. And the PGRU was working “to facilitate the establishment of the USDA-ARS industrial hemp germplasm collection at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY.”
